Is there a wy to keep shirts from shrinking?

I wear larges because they fit well on me but the moment I wash them they shrink to which they no longer feel comfortable on me. XL's are to big for me even after washing it so I'm basically lost. If there is no way to stop them from shrinking then will buying larges in tall size, which makes them a few inches longer than normal large, cause them to shrink to the size I want?
